Role brief

dataroles summary, based on the employer's posting.

What you'll do

  • Create and sustain the models and databases that power people-data products
  • Shape source-system data into documented, tested models, then encode dictionary metrics so calculations stay aligned
  • Build pipeline checks that compare sources and catch data-quality issues before they reach colleagues
  • Turn product needs into data models with the program manager, challenge mismatches, and preserve point-in-time accuracy
  • Control access to sensitive records and document how models and their data lineage work

What you bring

  • At least five years building production data models in analytics engineering, data engineering or a comparable role
  • Expert SQL skills and strong dimensional-modeling judgment, including when to normalize
  • At least five years with a transformation framework such as dbt, plus routine version control and code review
  • At least five years handling slowly changing dimensions, dated records and point-in-time reporting

Who this fits

This senior individual contributor role suits an engineer focused on governed people-data products and production modeling. You’ll work from the New York office on a hybrid schedule and report to the Senior Director of People Data and Insights.

From the employer

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role

The New York Times is rebuilding how we use people data. Instead of one-off reports and ad hoc pulls, we are building governed, reusable data tools that HR leaders, HR partners, and their counterparts use to make decisions. You will help build this layer. People data at The Times lives in several systems, each with its own definitions and history. You will turn that into a modeled, tested, documented foundation that products can be built on repeatedly. You will lead the models, transformations, and data quality behind every product this team ships. You will report to the Senior Director, People Data and Insights. You will work out of the New York office on a hybrid schedule.

Responsibilities:

  • You will design, build, and maintain the data models and databases that our products run on.
  • You will oversee the transformation layer from source systems into governed, tested, documented models.
  • You will turn metric definitions from the data dictionary into executable logic, so that a definition and the number it produces cannot drift apart.
  • You will build data quality into the pipeline: tests, validation, and reconciliation across sources that surface problems before team members do.
  • You will work with the Program Manager to translate product requirements into models, and push back when a requirement and the underlying data do not agree.
  • You will handle effective-dated and historical data correctly, so that point-in-time questions get point-in-time answers.
  • You will implement and maintain access controls appropriate to compensation, demographic, and other sensitive data.
  • You will document models and lineage so that all can understand why something was built the way it was.
  • You will demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or an equivalent role building production data models.
  • You are a SQL expert
  • Strong dimensional modeling skills, and the judgment to know when to normalize and when not to.
  • 5+ years of experience with a transformation framework such as dbt, and with version control and code review as part of normal practice.
  • 5+ years of experience handling slowly changing dimensions, dated records, and point-in-time reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience with HR or people data, and with systems such as Workday, Greenhouse, or One Model.
  • Python for orchestration, API work, or data validation.
  • 2+ years of experience with AWS data services.
  • Familiarity with BI and analytics tooling such as Hex, Tableau, or Looker.
  • 2+ years of experience in an organization with distinct populations operating under different rules, such as union and non-union groups.
